She shared about those benefits on <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/virtualvibe.brightbreaks.com\/episodes\/elevating-employee-wellness-in-the-remote-work-era-an-interview-with-amanda-payne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>an episode of the Virtual Vibe podcast<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/li><\/ul><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Commonwell invests in its leaders\u2019 role in wellness by pre-communicating about upcoming initiatives, sharing program adoption metrics, and encouraging them to invite their teams to participate.<br \/><br \/><\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amanda-payne-chrp-bb4919125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amanda Payne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, companies undertake some initiatives because they\u2019re right for the business and others simply because they\u2019re the right thing to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecommonwell.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Canadian company with just under 200 employees, views wellness as the right thing for both its business <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its people. \u201cI think that is why it\u2019s so important for the organization,\u201d says Amanda, who is The Commonwell\u2019s employee relations and HR program management lead.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organizational culture at The Commonwell promotes and rewards high performance, and wellness is a crucial part of that. When employees take part in healthy work practices, they can work efficiently and effectively. \u201cWork consumes so much of our daily life. You want to be working in a way that is healthy and supports you,\u201d Amanda explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/virtualvibe.brightbreaks.com\/episodes\/elevating-employee-wellness-in-the-remote-work-era-an-interview-with-amanda-payne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an episode of the Virtual Vibe podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I talked to Amanda about the role The Commonwell leadership plays in wellness at the company and the importance of versatility in wellness planning.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><h2>How The Commonwell Values Lead the Way to Wellness\u00a0<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commonwell\u2019s remote flexibility stands out to job applicants during the hiring process \u2014 many employees work solely from home, while others choose to come to the office when they want. But once hired, employees encounter other traits that set The Commonwell apart from other organizations.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do-It-Your-Way Days<\/span><\/h3><div><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before 2020, The Commonwell employees had several personal days available to them each year. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the company increased that number to allow people to navigate the additional stress. Instead of reverting to the previous number when life returned to \u201cnormal,\u201d The Commonwell continued to offer its staff additional days and rebranded personal days as \u201cdo-it-your-way days.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPersonal days are a little misunderstood,\u201d Amanda explains. \u201cPeople aren&#8217;t sure how to take them, what to say, or what they&#8217;re for.\u201d <\/span><b>Calling them \u201cdo-it-your-way days\u201d let The Commonwell put a fresh spin on the concept and reinforce that each employee gets to choose how they spend these days away from their desk.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt\u2019s up to you \u2014 it\u2019s your time off,\u201d says Amanda.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people have encountered someone who brags about not having taken a personal day in a decade \u2014 but The Commonwell wants to avoid that behavior and encourage wellness through time off.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though employees are free to take time off without sharing what they used the time for, Amanda notes that many people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">share about their do-it-your-way days. Some use the time to focus on their health. Some employee resource groups have shared that they use the time to celebrate diverse holidays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCommunicating the importance of taking them is key,\u201d Amanda says.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Egoless Leadership<\/span><\/h3><div><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Amanda was hired, CEO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tim-shauf-395a6718\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Shauf <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reached out to her personally and booked time on her calendar to get to know her. This surprised her \u2014 since she had come from a smaller company, she didn\u2019t expect the president of a company of around 200 to reach out to her. But Tim didn\u2019t stop there. A year later, he followed up with her to ask about her experience and learn how the company could improve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a clear-cut example of The Commonwell\u2019s value of \u201cegoless leadership.\u201d <\/span><b>Those who are at the helm of the company don\u2019t distance themselves from employees \u2014 instead, they engage with the staff directly, asking for feedback and then acting on it.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When The Commonwell asked its employees what it was like to work at the company, they consistently pointed to their leaders \u2014 leaders who care, make themselves available and have their teams\u2019 backs. Yes, everyone has goals to reach and things to get done, Amanda acknowledges. But at the end of the day, \u201cThere\u2019s a level of natural caring that is brought to the table that we\u2019re all crossing the finish line together.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Egoless leadership creates a culture of wellness by reminding everyone that their leaders care about them as people and want them to succeed.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><h2>The Role of Leadership in Wellness<\/h2><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/349484\/state-of-the-global-workplace.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent Gallup research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that, while many factors influence employee stress, managers play a critical role in workers\u2019 on-the-job and overall stress \u2014 for better or worse. Supportive leadership can make all the difference in decreasing employee burnout and driving wellness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From having an accessible CEO who reaches out to new employees to empowering people to lead wellness initiatives without a formal title, The Commonwell is a shining example of supporting employees effectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>On top of training leadership on wellness topics, Amanda says that HR intentionally pre-communicates about upcoming initiatives. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She shares about participation rates in current programs and encourages leaders to find ways to get their team involved with new resources.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But she also tries to ensure that leaders have time to engage in wellness <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">themselves<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cLeaders can very easily get bogged down in the day-to-day work,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s really important to take that time where you might not have that water cooler talk anymore in the remote world.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her goal with leadership teams is to communicate what\u2019s happening in the world of wellness, share how they can get involved, keep them accountable, and ensure they have the right tools at their disposal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s also not afraid to repeat herself \u2014 in the hustle and bustle of the work week, busy leaders can use additional reminders. \u201cRecommunicating over and over again is so key,\u201d says Amanda.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><h2>Keeping Wellness Initiatives Versatile<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amanda says that versatility is one of her team\u2019s top priorities when offering wellness programs. Whether an employee works solely from home or comes to the office more often, HR approaches and prioritizes wellness with the same energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRegardless of where somebody works, it\u2019s important that they\u2019re able to engage in wellness,\u201d she explains. \u201cIf we didn\u2019t approach wellness the same way for each group, inevitably, people would miss out.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team incorporates different elements through various wellness initiatives, and Amanda acknowledges that some outcomes,\u00a0 such as physical or mental wellness,\u00a0 are easier to optimize for than other areas of well-being such as financial wellness. Finding the right program to fit the entire The Commonwell team can be a challenge. <\/span><b>But by focusing on versatility and offering at least some initiatives in multiple areas of wellness, The Commonwell\u2019s HR team supports everyone.<\/b><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are just a few of the ways they support employees\u2019 wellness journeys:<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Corporate wellness. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees can receive reimbursement for gym memberships, exercise equipment and other expenses that promote their personal wellness.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flexible benefits program. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals can choose the level of benefits coverage they receive based on a \u201ccredits\u201d model. If employees have excess credits, they are reimbursed and can spend those funds on wellness activities of their choice.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mental health benefits. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recently, The Commonwell has started offering mental wellness programs like an Employee Assistance Program and webinars with the Canadian Mental Health Association.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Personal wellness offerings. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commonwell works with a Toronto-based wellness provider to offer events like cooking classes and other educational webinars. They also use Bright Breaks to encourage employees to take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brightbreaks.com\/blog\/taking-breaks-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven-minute wellness breaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the workday.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Employee resources. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through a partnership with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leanin.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lean In<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, The Commonwell offers allyship training to its staff and Lean In Circles that connect women within the organization, including one group focused on wellness journeys.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By offering a variety of wellness resources, The Commonwell allows each employee to engage with those that most closely align with their needs and journey.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><h2>What Wellness Success Looks Like<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Amanda looks to measure the performance of wellness initiatives, she goes back to what she calls the key component of wellness: \u201cIt&#8217;s the right thing to do for people. Of course, it&#8217;s important for the business, but \u2026 that really key piece [is] it&#8217;s important for people.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>She looks out for metrics like how many employees in the organization are using each of the tools offered while acknowledging that each person is different. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people might gravitate toward one resource more than others, and that\u2019s okay \u2014 \u201cas long as there&#8217;s enough versatility that it meets the needs of your employee groups,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Amanda also carefully watches the HR lift of any new wellness initiative.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Internal wellness challenges \u2014 such as competitive \u201cbingo\u201d-style events \u2014 are fun and exciting for employees, but they also add work and stress to the HR team.
